戏曲角色行当有生 sheng/the male role、旦 dan/the female role、净 jing/the painted-face role、丑 chou/the comic role。生，一般扮演青壮年角色，是剧中的主要人物；旦，扮演女性人物；净，俗称“花脸”，扮演性格粗犷豪放或阴险狡诈的男性人物；丑，根据扮演人物的性格和身份不同分为文丑和武丑。Chou is classified into clown mainly in terms of dialogue and acting and acrobatic-fighting clown according to different personalities and identities of roles.
